India’s Dual-Airport Strategy: Smart Move or Unnecessary Competition?

India is increasingly moving towards two-airport systems for major cities Delhi-NCR with IGI & Jewar, and Mumbai with Mumbai International & Navi Mumbai.

The logic is simple: more capacity, less congestion, better regional connectivity.

But there’s another side.

Will passengers really benefit if airlines split operations between two airports? What about longer travel times, higher ground-transport costs, connecting passengers, and the possibility of two airports competing for the same traffic?

At the same time, a second airport can create new economic hubs, unlock capacity and give airlines more room to grow.

So, is India building the future of aviation or creating an expensive infrastructure race?
